Claim

On March 1, 2024, Kafue Updates Facebook page posted an image depicting littered condoms. The image was accompanied by a statement, “Surely the end is near zoona. This is what is happening mu Kafue mm”. This sparked different reactions from the followers of the page, with some expressing concern and others questioning the location the image was taken from.

Rating Justification

iVerify Zambia has determined as false the claim by the Kafue Updates Facebook page that the image depicting littered condoms was captured in Kafue, a town in Zambia. In investigating and establishing the origin of the image, iVerify Zambia conducted a Google reverse image search, which revealed that the image had extensively been shared before, on various platforms like Twitter, Reddit, Telegram, and even TikTok. Some of the social media accounts found to have shared the image on Twitter before were traced to Uganda and Nigeria. A further investigation of the image revealed that it lacked any identifiable landmarks that could qualify the claim by the Facebook page that the image was from Kafue town. Therefore, the claim is false.
